I am finally figuring out how this blog works. I enjoy reading it, but just didn't know how to contribute to it. June 1 and 2 we had Ward youth conference up at the cabin. The kids actually camped on Davids property to the west. There were 20 youth and 14 adults. That includes 5 women that did the cooking. We stayed in the cabin. They did a lot of different games and activities that focused on the Book of Mormon, such as: Zach Casey dressed up as Samuel the Lamanite standing on the water tank with the other kids launching water balloons at him. Dad had created a little hike up to the road and around that used a compass (as well as his "liahona"rebar ball). The kids had to attack the adults with marshmellow shooters to get the treasure, a golden metal box (the brass plates from Laban) and other fun things. The highlight was a re-creation of Lehi's dream that was at 9:00 at night in the dark. I can't describe all of it, but they were blindfolded briefly and led to the iron rod. They went through the mists of darkness which was a huge black plastic tent that had a strobe light and fog machine. Leaders would talk to the kids trying to tempt them to let go of the rod with things like: "let's get tattooes together." "Let's go to the party!" "You can ditch seminary just once!" etc. Then they would emerge fromt he mists of darkness and there was a projection of a large and spacious building with fog machines going. Adults would mock the kids about being goody-goodies etc. At the end there was a large pine tree that they had lit up with white Christmas lights and Bishop Eddington greeted them with a cup of fruit and yummy dip. It was a very neat presentation. All of the kids thought that it was the highlight of the weekend. Other cool things that happened was the kids were eating lunch and an elk came running across the meadow with two coyotes chasing it. Then at breakfast two elk went prancing through the meadow by the house. It was so cool to see the elk. I never have seen them like that before. The ward thinks that we must see them all the time! I'm not sure when we will make it up to the cabin next.

It sounds like a very successful youth conference. The activities sound like a lot of fun. Did the coyotes end up catching the elk?
It sounds like you guys came up with a lot of great ideas and activities to make the conference a great experience for the kids. How fun it would be to be a part of that. I told Burke that we might have to take a trip to the cabin at Christmas or something since he's never been and that is the next time that we'll be down long enough for that. Maybe some Christmastime snowmobiling...
