Philmont

We started our vacation on Friday by driving through Holbrook, the Petrified Forest and Gallup NM. We spent the night in Santa Fe. We walked around the little streets that evening and saw the many art galleries. Sat. we got up and drove the few hours to Philmont (Cimarron, NM). While we were driving, a van from Georgia passed us with a license plate that said, "Families are Forever." We said, " We know where they are going! and I wonder if they know the Weiler's?" When we pulled in to Philmont, we parked next to the van. There was a 10 year old girl hanging on the door. I spoke to her and she said her mom's name was SueEllen. Our mouths dropped! It turned out to be our friends the Weiler's, Bob and SueEllen. It was fun to see them throughout the week.
Anna and Aaron met with their Mountain Trek Leaders, had a thorough shake down and left on their week long trek at 5:00 Saturday. Their packs were 35-40 pounds. Anna hiked around 40 miles with her group and Aaron hiked about 30 miles with his group. All seven groups went on different routes/trails. They stop at a different camp each night and there are 32 different camps in the backcountry. Anna's trail took her up to 10,200 feet to camp. They need to tell about their trek themselves. It was a great experience and they learned so many things.
Dad and I stayed in a tent and Karen shared with another girl. There were over 200 tents full of 2-3 people. Dad went to classes each day, and I went to a museum, cope course activities, guest speakers for the sisters each day. I enjoyed it.
One of the pictures is of Anna and Aaron when they returned to camp on Thursday evening at 6:30. They came parading in. It was great to see them. The cafeteria was where we ate every day. They food was OK. We had a really great time and we feel very fortunate to have been able to go there.
